Adorable DIY Gingerbread Man Jar

Here at Berry and Pine, I’m working through my Dollar Tree craft stash and found a few of these fish bowl vases. Of course I had to make a couple of Christmas crafts with them like this cute DIY snowman candy dish.

For this adorable Christmas craft, you’ll need the vase, some paint, and sealant. Yep, it’s that simple.

Today’s easy Christmas DIY is done in stages and has some time for you to do wait on paint to dry. While you’re waiting, come visit Berry and Pine on Facebook.

Ways to Use This Gingerbread DIY

You can add this to a tiered tray tray and fill it with wrapped candy. Everyone loves sweets or peppermints during the holidays.

You could also use E6000 and glue this to a Dollar Tree glass candle holder for an elevated display. Add a little bow or a scrap of fabric where the two pieces meet and you’ll have a slightly elevated piece to add visual interest to a mantle or display.

Over the years, I’ve also painted these and tucked in some fun. Hot cocoa packets with extra mini marshmallows, a small gift, or ribbon-tied money all make great fillers. For this one, get a gingerbread cookie mix, a miniature holiday whisk, and write up a gingerbread cookie recipe!

Materials Needed for This Christmas DIY

Below are the materials I used but check your stash to see what you can use up. If your craft room is anything like mine, it might be overflowing with possibilities.

NOTE: I have tested many paint colors and will say that this shade of brown acrylic paint produces the best gingerbread color of any I’ve used. It’s light enough to layer without ending up too dark.

  • glass fish bowl vase
  • brown acrylic paint and a foam brush
  • clear sealant
  • white and black paint pen (and a pencil)
  • optional, pink paint and a sponge dobber (for cheeks)

How to Make a Cute Gingerbread Jar

Below is the step by step tutorial with a couple of images to guide you. If you’d prefer to print this craft, please scroll down.

First, remove any tags and spray the vase with a clear sealant. This will help avoid the paint from chipping. Set aside to dry.

Add two coats of the honeycomb acrylic paint with a foam brush to the outside of the vase, letting dry in between.

Use paint pens to create a simple face: black oval eyes with white dot highlights and a simple smile. Use the white paint pen to create a little wiggle detail along the top edge of the jar. Let dry.

Spray at least one coat of sealant to protect your work (two is recommended). Add candy and display your gingerbread candy dish!
