Dollar Tree Door Signs

Here at Berry and Pine, I’m kicking off the holiday season with a few signs. Wood is expensive, so I always head to the dollar stores to find my blanks.

Even though they’re thin and perfect for indoor signs, you can double or triple up the wood cutouts for some amazing outdoor signs. With the right sealant and decorations, you’ll have a Christmas craft to make and sell!

Today’s easy dollar store DIY is done in stages and has some time waiting on projects to dry. While you’re waiting, come visit Berry and Pine on Facebook.

Tips for Using Wood Cutouts from the Dollar Tree

Using a few basic craft supplies and these wood cut outs from the dollar store, I was able to create two door signs at once. These are double-layered, giving them extra heft.

You’ll need at least two signs for each of these designs. They’ll be adhered together with both wood glue and a super glue, held together by clamps. Don’t skip this part.

I tend to create a lot of blanks at once time, gluing and clamping in an assembly line of sorts. It makes it easy to grab and go when I’m ready to paint or stain.

If you want to put these outside, please note that you will need to add sealant prior to the decorations being added. Two to three generous coats of a clear spray sealant should suffice, however, if you’re in harsher conditions it might be wise to use a brush on polyurethane.

Materials Needed for These Stained Wood Door Signs

Below are the materials I used but check your stash to see what you can use up. If your craft room is anything like mine, it might be overflowing with possibilities.

If you’re making an indoor sign, you’ll only need one wood cutout. Also, if you don’t have stain, you can add a small amount of water to acrylic paint and use that in place of it.

  • wood cutouts (outdoor signs need at least two of each shape)
  • wood glue and super glue with clamps to hold
  • stain, acrylic paint, and sealant
  • masking tape and ModPodge
  • greenery, ribbon, and decorations (I used plate words)
