Painted Wood Snowman Craft
Here at Berry and Pine, I’m working through my insane craft supply stash. I tend to buy a LOT of items after Christmas when they’re on clearance and it’s time to start crafting for the holidays.
These thick snowman shelf sitters were from the craft store (Michael’s) and I couldn’t pass up getting two of them. One had such a beautiful wood grain that matched my mantle and well, the other was… perfect for crafting with!
Today’s easy winter DIY is done in stages and has some time waiting on projects to dry. While you’re waiting, come visit Berry and Pine on Facebook.

Painting with ModPodge for Clean Lines
Using a few basic craft supplies and these wood cut outs from the craft store, I was able to create two cute snowmen for my mantle. One is just getting a scarf but the other uses an easy ModPodge trick to get the most perfect lines.
For this method, you’ll add masking tape to a portion of wood. Press it as flat as you can and use a small paintbrush to add a thin line of ModPodge along the masking tape edge.
You’ll then apply the stain or paint, remove the masking while it’s wet, and then let it dry. This method is EASY and quick because the thin layer of ModPodge dries so quickly.

Materials Needed for a Wood Snowman
Below are the materials I used but check your stash to see what you can use up. If your craft room is anything like mine, it might be overflowing with possibilities.
If you don’t have stain, you can add a small amount of water to acrylic paint and use that in place of it. Remember to wipe off the excess so the wood grain comes through.
- wood shapes (I picked up two 1-inch thick snowman from Michaels)
- stain and acrylic paint
- masking tape and ModPodge
- fabric for a scarf
How to Make a Stained Wood Snowman
Below is the step by step tutorial with a couple of guide images. If you’d prefer to print this craft, please scroll down.
First, remove tags and apply masking tape to the bottom edge of the snowman’s hat. Press with your finger.
Use a small paint brush and apply a thin layer of ModPodge along the line of the masking tape, slightly overlapping on the wood. Let dry for a couple of minutes.
Protect your work surface, open, and stir the stain. Use a paper towel or old rag to apply the stain to the snowman hat. Wipe before it completely dries to remove excess stain and let dry.

Use another piece of masking tape and align it with the bottom of the stain. Apply a thin layer of ModPodge and let dry.
Paint the snowman body with a white paint (I used chalk paint and a foam brush). Remove the tape while the paint is wet and let dry.

Cut a piece of fabric wide enough to go around the snowman form between the head and the body. Glue to the body, use scissors to create a fringed scarf end, and your wood stained snowman DIY is ready for display!
